Dubai 101: tips for Americans you won’t find in the guidebook

Dubai offers a stunning mix of cultural depth and luxury, but it’s helpful to be aware of a few important details for a smooth trip.

Local Culture & Etiquette

Modesty in public areas is appreciated, especially at religious sites. While Dubai is cosmopolitan, public displays of affection should be limited. Locals are friendly, but respect for their customs is key.

Currency & Payment

The currency in Dubai is the UAE Dirham (AED), with about 3.67 AED to 1 USD. ATMs and exchange spots are readily available, and international credit cards are widely accepted. But no need to bring big amounts of cash. It may come in handy for small transactions, especially in local markets.

Alcohol Regulations

Dubai has a lively nightlife, but be mindful, alcohol is available only in licensed venues, usually within hotels. Public intoxication is prohibited. Drinking in public areas or outside these licensed locations can lead to fines.

Weekend & Workweek

The weekend in Dubai is Friday and Saturday, with Sunday marking the start of the workweek. Fridays, particularly in the morning, may see some businesses closed for Jumu'ah (Friday prayers).

Photos & Social Media

Dubai’s photogenic architecture makes for great photos, but always ask permission before photographing locals. Avoid capturing government buildings, military sites, or any sensitive areas. Also, be mindful of the country’s strict cyber laws, including regulations on sharing content that could be seen as negative or controversial.

Internet &Communication Restrictions

Many popular internet video calling services, including FaceTime and WhatsApp video calls, are restricted in Dubai. While you’ll have full access to other web services, video calls generally require paid alternatives like Botim or local SIMs, or can also be activated via VPN.

Laws to Know

Dubai has strict laws that may differ greatly from those in the U.S. It’s best to steer clear of arguments in public, avoid any drug-related activity, and keep your online comments respectful, as local regulations cover both in-person and online conduct.
